The Academy Awards may have been remiss in not including Clint Eastwood in the list of nominees for Best Actor and Gran Torino in the Best Picture category. However, Clint Eastwood was vindicated because he has been given the top honor for the Cannes Film Festival in advance. The Palme d’Or or Golden Palm Award was given to Clint Eastwood three months before the opening of the Cannes Festival. The honor was bestowed by no less than Festival president Gilles Jacob at the Le Fouquet restaurant in Paris last Wednesday. Gilles Jacob said they were honoring the talent of a grand master at the peak of his quarter-century of complicity.
Clint Eastwood, who came to the ceremony with his family, credited the support given to him by French film makers during his directorial debut in 1970. It is very flattering, was all Clint Eastwood could say about his award. The 78-year old Clint Eastwood also took the opportunity to promote Gran Torino where he is both star and director. He may have been snubbed by the Oscars but Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino is the biggest winner in the box office.
