Sharpton Marches to a Decent Tune

Al Sharpton is the king of staying in the lime light. Recognizing that the Don Imus fiasco was over and he was quickly settling back into obscurity, Al decided to take matters into his own hands. The result: a march in New York demanding that music remove racist and sexist language from its lyrics. I know he’s a civic leader and all, but he ought to remember the 5th amendment and all that it stands for, right? Isn’t he a lawyer or something? In any case, only 400 people showed up to join Al in his crusade. I guess most of them were busy listening to rap.
As much as I am offended by much of what is said in music today, I am more offended by posers like Sharpton stepping into the news to yell about an issue just so they can stay famous. Music is still an art form, and for hundreds of years people have been trying to censor art. That explains all the fig leaves on the statues in Italy. What I don’t understand is why we haven’t learned from this. Censorship only leads to oppression. We are a free country after all. Let our musicians remain so.
